"Impact of the synchronisation of ambient visual effects to the musical soundtrack on the player’s experience in non-realistic solo games"

I worked on a Professional Master's thesis for the Interactive Digital Experience (Gobelins and Cnam-Enjmin) formation under the supervision of Stephane Cugnet. This work aimed at evaluating the impact on player of the synchronization of ambient non-gameplay-related animations to the music track of a game.

The exercise prompted an experiment, for which I made a Unity WebGL game.

  • Most of the ambient animations are done in shader using vertex and UV displacement.
  • The syncrhonization is based upon an offline beat detection done using a Multi-Feature Beat Tracker.
